BR&E Spotlight: CrustBuster
As part of our Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) program, we recently met with CrustBuster, a cornerstone of southwest Kansas’ agricultural manufacturing sector. Headquartered in Spearville, CrustBuster has been building reliable, innovative farm equipment for over 60 years. From grain drills to seed tenders to peanut planters, their machinery is used by farmers across the country, and even abroad.
With around 100 full-time employees, CrustBuster continues to serve as a major employer and economic driver for the region. The company is well known for its commitment to in-house training and product innovation, particularly in emerging areas like conservation, cover crops, and specialty planting. Their products are distributed through a nationwide network of 200–300 dealers.
Focused on Innovation Despite Market Pressures
CrustBuster’s team highlighted that while the current ag machinery market is facing uncertainty, including dealer slowdowns and tariff-related cost volatility, the company is taking proactive steps to diversify its product line and stabilize production. This year, their twin-row peanut planter and grain drills have been among the most profitable pieces of equipment, thanks to their specialized features and adaptability to new planting trends.
With a growing national interest in conservation and cover crop practices, particularly in eastern U.S. markets, CrustBuster is positioning itself to meet new demand. Their smaller grain drills are especially popular in organic and regenerative ag circles, and the company continues to make product adjustments to serve this evolving market. CrustBuster is exploring robotics and machinery solutions to increase efficiency. CrustBuster is deeply embedded in the Spearville community and continues to invest in the region. Looking to the future, CrustBuster sees opportunity in supporting trends like narrow-row planting, autonomous machinery, and soil health technologies. Their facilities currently support container shipping for export, with occasional international sales in Australia and Europe.
A Manufacturer with Deep Roots and a Forward Focus
CrustBuster is a shining example of the resilience and innovation found in western Kansas manufacturing. Their commitment to evolving with the agricultural landscape, while continuing to support local workers and the rural economy, makes them a valued partner in our regional development efforts.
We thank Matt Hornung and the CrustBuster team for participating in our BR&E survey. Their insights help guide future initiatives in workforce development, infrastructure investment, and support for regional manufacturing.
